Release 74.17 - Folder update access denied errors

galileo :

Sep 13, 2015

Just updated to R74.17 from R74.16. When Bvckup2 runs to my NAS (QNAP) I now receive a two errors when it attempts to update folder information. I am backing up the Windows 10 User profile folders and receive the errors on the "Downloads" and "Links" folders. All other User folders seem to be handled just fine. I do not receive the errors if I backup to an external hard drive using a cloned Bvckup2 job and changing only the backup destination.

I did not receive these errors with R74.16 - in Windows 10 btw. Bvckup2 has been pretty bullet proof up to this point...strange that these should crop up out of the blue....

This is most certainly due to a change in access rights requested by the app when opening folders for updates - exactly the difference between 74.17 and 74.16.

Previously the app was requesting "write attributes", now it requests "generic write". Latter is a bit wider that former, but as per MS docs it shouldn't really matter.

Can you email me the error details from the log please (support@pipemetrics.com - or just drop them here)? You can open log in Notepad via "Log Options" menu at the top-left corner of the log panel.

It's very easy to narrow down requested access rights back to what it was in 74.16, but I just want to understand the context before doing that.

Thanks for the very prompt reply! I have emailed you the backup.log file with a subject line the same as this topic title.

I've been trying to resolve an issue that looks a lot like this one for several weeks now and getting nowhere with it. I am getting lots of "access denied" errors in the "Updating folder information" phase of backup jobs. I'm backing up files and folders from my C drive to a Western Digital My Book Live NAS drive. Following is a paste of the relevant section of the log file. Any ideas or suggestions? I think I have tried all the suggestions documented in the Support Forum for "access denied" issues but I am likely missing something. Thanks for any suggestions you may have to resolve this issue.

A little more information...
Running Bvckup2 verion 77.9 under Windows 10 Home
Log file listing above shows 8 access denied errors out of the total of 29 folders to be updated. The other 21 folder updates reported no error.

8 access denied errors out of the total of 29 folders to be updated

This part is strange, but I'd guess it's also a key to your problem.

Folder details are always updated the same way regardless of what exactly is being updated. Meaning that there are 8 folders with one set of security permissions and there 21 other with another set.

You haven't had the backup job set to copy "Owner / Group / DACL" at some point earlier, have you? That would be in Backup Settings > More Options > Copy Also section.

---

Regardless of how your backup ended up in this state, I would probably just pull up Properties window in Windows Explorer for a folder from each group, go into Security tab and compare the permissions.

If they are exactly the same, then it's either a quirk of MyBookLive (won't be the first one) or it's some sort of interference from a 3rd party antivirus software (if you are running one). In the latter case consider whitelisting your backup location, see if it makes any difference.

If they are different, then you will need to patch up 8 problematic folders to have the same permissions as those on their counterparts.

Thanks for the quick response. I've investigated the things you suggest but haven't been able to find anything that helps.

I'm pretty well convinced after reading issues on the Western Digital community forum  that it is some kind of a MyBookLive quirk that a factory reset of the drive may correct. I don't really want to do that right now, though.

I resorted to cloning my backup jobs to go to an attached drive as opposed to the NAS drive and they run flawlessly. I like the speed, reliability, configurability and simplicity of the Bvckup2 application and am going with this strategy rather than spend more time monkeying with the older NAS drive.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Just a follow up, since moving backups to an attached drive from the NAS drive, there have been no backup errors at all.
